Plutonium in contaminated water
Sample Type | Water |
---|---|
Elements | Pu |
Radioisotopes | 239,240Pu, 238Pu |
Detection by | alpha | Description | This method describes the isolation of plutonium in all types of water. The sample is heated in HNO3 and then in 3:1 HNO3:HCl. The volume is then reduced to near dryness and finally the volume of the sample is adjusted with 1:1 HNO3. The sample is then ready to be purified by ion exchange separation, also described in this method. The method was developed by the Environmental Measurements Laboratory, originally called the Health and Safety Laboratory (HASL) and is a part of their HASL-300 manual. |
