Description

This method specifies the minimum requirements and laboratory methods for the analysis of 90Sr in sediment or biota samples. It gives a description of the radiochemical steps for quantification of strontium 90 by gas proportional counter.

90Sr is measured in the samples of the environment by β counting of its descendant

90Y, with a proportional counter. The procedure requires prior radiochemistry to extract 90Sr from the sample and separate it from 90Y initially present. The measurement is carried out after about 14 days, after which yttrium 90 is at secular equilibrium with strontium 90.
